A bore-out occurs when a person feels underutilised for a long period of time and therefore becomes bored and frustrated at work. In Excelling in Freedom, I describe how important it is to know our own values and motivations, because these are deeply embedded in what moves us and gives meaning to our work and life. Bore-out can stem from not being able to use our talents and a lack of satisfaction because work does not match our intrinsic motivation.
Recognising a bore-out
You can often recognise a bore-out by subtle symptoms such as a feeling of emptiness, fatigue without physical exertion, and a lack of enthusiasm for daily tasks. People often feel stuck and dissatisfied without understanding exactly why. This can manifest itself in mental and physical signs such as irritability, lethargy, stomach aches, headaches, and even physical complaints due to the negative energy one experiences day in and day out.
Prevention and Approach
- Increasing self-knowledge: In the book, I emphasise how self-awareness and knowing your values are essential. By getting clear on what your drives are-for example, the desire for freedom, control, or just cooperation-you can signal earlier when your work is no longer feeding these core values.
- Challenging yourself: An important aspect of Excelling in Freedom is the continuous search for personal growth. Keep challenging yourself, not only within your role, but also by developing new skills and interests. This not only prevents bore-out but also increases your sense of value and meaning in what you do.
- Finding balance: Bore-out can result from an imbalance between personal goals and work requirements. Excelling in Freedom advocates finding that balance by regularly reflecting on your own recipe for personal growth. This means making conscious choices that match who you are and what you stand for.
- Thinking styles: The book covers thinking styles and how they can colour our perception of our work. By knowing which thinking style you naturally apply, such as practical thinking or empathy, you can find tasks or projects that suit you better, and therefore get meaning and satisfaction from your work.
Preventing bore-out requires the courage to get to know yourself better and to look for work that fits your core values. Excelling in Freedom helps you discover who you are, what drives you, and how to create a life where you continue to grow and develop yourself.
